Add a news or updates page to your site

A news page gives your community one place to see the latest updates from across your site, without opening each project in turn. You build it from an ordinary site page and the **Updates** content block, then add it to your main menu.

![A Latest news page opened from the News link in the site's main menu (highlighted), showing four project updates as cards with an image, title and summary](https://engage.knowledge.civ.io/storage/nrWvud8TvoU7ItK34sKDMuuwU2NWwhvG93bUrVoa.jpg)

What a news page is for
-----------------------

The news page lists updates your team already publishes, so there is no separate content to keep up to date.

- **Updates appear automatically.** When an update is published in a project, it shows on the news page as well as on that project's page.
- **Every engagement in one place.** Updates from all your projects sit together, so people can see what is open, what has changed and what has been decided without knowing which project to look in.
- **Reporting back.** An update on what you heard in a consultation and what happens next reaches people browsing the news page, not only those who return to the project.
- **Site-wide news as well.** News that isn't tied to a project, such as a new way to take part, can show on the same page.

Each card shows the update's image, title and summary, and links through to the full update.

Create the news page
--------------------

1. Click **Content** in the left-hand menu, then **Pages**.
2. Click the **+** icon.
3. Enter a **Title** (for example *News* or *Latest news*) and a short **Summary**. Both show in the banner at the top of the page.
4. Scroll below the body and click **Add block**.
5. Select **Updates** from the list. You can type to filter it.
6. Enter a **Title** for the block, such as *Project news*. It shows above the cards.
7. Click **Additional options** and set **Parent context** to the updates you want to show (see the next section).
8. Click **Add Updates**.
9. Click **Publish**, add a revision message if you like, then click **Confirm**.

Choose which updates appear
---------------------------

Updates come from two places in Civio Engage:

- **Project updates**: news about one project, created under **Projects** > your project > **Updates**. See [Create and edit project updates](/articles/9180844968847-Create-and-edit-project-updates).
- **Site-wide updates**: news that isn't tied to a project, created under **Content** > **Updates**.

The **Parent context** setting, under **Additional options**, decides which of these the block lists:

Parent context

What the block shows

**All context**

Every published update, from your projects and site-wide.

**Global updates only**

Site-wide updates only.

**Project context only**

Updates from all of your projects.

A new Updates block is set to **Global updates only**. If your news is posted as project updates, change this to **Project context only** or **All context**, or the block won't show them.

The other settings control how the cards are laid out:

- **What to display**: **All items** lists your updates automatically. **Custom selection** lets you pick specific updates and drag them into order.
- **Sort order**: **Newest first** or **Oldest first**. Only applies to **All items**.
- **Limit number of items**: the most cards the block shows (4 by default). Only applies to **All items**.
- **Items per row**: from 1 to 5 cards across.
- **Title position**: where the block title sits, **Top**, **Left** or **Right** of the cards.
- **Display a link to all content**: adds a **View all updates** link below the cards.

To change these later, edit the page, click the block, make your changes, click **Done** and publish the page again.

Add the page to your main menu
------------------------------

1. Open the news page's edit screen and note its **Url alias** in the right-hand panel. The page's address is `/page/` followed by the alias, for example `/page/latest-news`.
2. Go to **Settings** > **Structure** > **Menus** and click **Main navigation**.
3. Click **Add link**.
4. Enter the **Title** to show in the menu, such as *News*, and paste the page's address into **Url**. Leave **This link is enabled and visible** ticked.
5. Click **Done**. The new link appears at the bottom of the list. Drag it by its handle to change its position.
6. Click **Save**. The link now shows in the main menu across your site.

You can also add an Updates block to your home page, so the latest few updates show there too. Find your home page under **Settings** > **Structure** > **Home page**, edit it under **Content** > **Pages**, and add the block in the same way. See [Editing the site home page](/articles/9176489815567-Editing-the-site-home-page).
