This article covers how to access the Template Library, save tools as templates, and create new tools from templates.

Templates allow you to save your best engagement tools as reusable starting points. Instead of building [surveys](/articles/9182830898191-Create-and-edit-a-survey), [pages](/articles/9176541586319-Create-and-edit-basic-site-pages), or other tools from scratch each time, you can create a template once and use it across your site and [projects](/articles/article-5-creating-your-first-project) whenever you need it.

Accessing the Template Library
------------------------------

The Template Library is accessible from the main dashboard navigation. Click the **Templates** menu item in the left-hand sidebar, then select **All templates** to view the full list of saved templates.

Clicking on a template's title opens its **Preview** page, where you can review the template's content and settings before using it.

Saving a tool as a template
---------------------------

To save an existing tool as a template:

1. Navigate to the tool you want to save (e.g. a published survey or page).
2. Click the **More...** tab at the top of the tool page.
3. Select **Save as template**.
4. A confirmation message will appear once the template has been saved successfully.

The template will include all [content blocks](/articles/9179124696591-How-to-use-content-blocks-and-groups), settings, and configuration from the original tool. It is saved to the site-wide Template Library and can be used by any team member with the appropriate permissions.

**Note:** Documents and Hotspots cannot be saved as templates. For tools with attached maps (such as [Idea Boards](/articles/9184062005007-Create-and-edit-an-idea-board) and [Map Feedback](/articles/10028992146575-Create-and-edit-a-map-feedback)), the map is included in the template. For Timelines and Events, the start and end dates are cleared when the template is saved.

Creating a tool from a template
-------------------------------

From the Template Library, you can use a template in two ways:

- Click the **three-dot menu** (⋮) next to a template and select **Use template**, or
- Click into a template to open its preview page, then click the **Use template** button.

You will be prompted to provide a **title** for the new tool and select where you would like to save it — either as **Site Content (Global)** or under a specific **Project**. Click **Create \[tool type\] from template** to finish. The new tool will be created in [**Draft**](/articles/9176823327503-Workflow-status) status with all the template's content and settings pre-filled, ready for you to customise.

Permissions
-----------

Template permissions are managed at the system level. **Admins** can create, edit, and delete templates. Users with content creation rights — including **Team Leads**, **Project Managers**, and **Engagement Officers** — can view and use templates to create new tools within the contexts they have access to.

Users can only use templates for tool types they have permission to create. For example, if a user can create surveys within a project, they will be able to use survey templates in that project.

For more information on user roles and permissions, see [User roles](/articles/9176861358095-User-roles).
